Bridge Collapse: Overnight coverage…

CNN had Frederika Whitfield anchoring from 2-5 am when American Morning came on early. At 3am, FNC was apparently running tape from earlier in the breaking newscast before Fox and Friends started early. MSNBC had Christina Brown anchoring until 4am when it went to tape until 5am when Amy Robach came on to anchor for an hour until Morning Joe started.

  1. I’m shocked this story made the news at all being that Spears and Hilton weren’t on the bridge.

  2. “I’m shocked this story made the news at all being that Spears and Hilton weren’t on the bridge.”

Is it very wrong or mildly wrong for me to wish they were on the bridge?

I LMAO this morning. I peeked at AM on CNN and there is Kiran (in NY, what gives?) with this long, long question for a structural engineer. She goes on and on, maybe trying to show her journalism but the guy answered with a simple “yes”. Then she’s waiting for like more answer and he just keeps quiet. Too funny!!!!!

  3. LOL I think I saw that same segment too Mary…hillarious!

But all things considered, she did a good job 5-6am solo…I was kinda impressed.

  4. I was disappointed not to see Alisyn anchoring F&F First
this morning..Does FNC think she can’t handle hard, breaking news?

  5. Why Fox is obsessed w/ the word “TERROR”? If the fire was before or after the building collapse, if terror is ruled out now, etc… Its an accident.

  6. 5:

Ahhh…you leaked one of the memes the left will use to attck FNC for. Also, I’m sure the left will find a way to attack Bush and the Gov of Minn. Naturally, since Pawlenty is a Republican, you’ll factor that in as well.

Better hold off next time. Also, in th einitial fog, how can you rule anything out? Or, do you also believe that recent arrests in the US and UK were fake?

Also, initially, who knows what happened?

  7. Because terrorism right now is a fact of life… and reminding people that it WASN’T a terrorist attack and just an accident, will help keep the public at large calm.

  8. I think the reason Alisyn wasnt anchoring has little to do with whether or not she can handle breaking news and more to do with Gretchen being a native of Minniapolis.

    Comment by Wenchie — August 2, 2007 @ 12:08 pm

  9. The first person to suggest a terrorist attack was Nancy Grace.

  10. Rodrigo & Blue: As I said on another ICN thread, it find it interesting how terror was ruled out within 15 minutes after the collapse, apparently by the Department of Homeland Security in DC, not somebody in Minneapolis.

  11. I didn’t think terror was “ruled out.” Just “unlikely.”

    Comment by Gab — August 2, 2007 @ 1:52 pm

  12. On Fox and friends first Gretchen was delivering the news because she is a native Minniapolis, so is Lauren Green she was on because she is from the area were the bridge collapsed member of her family had traveled that bridge that morning.
I belive she should have been given more opportunity to elaborate on the subject since she is more than just a native. I do miss Lauren she should be on more often

  13. Ira, I fully agree. We’re fed FEAR 24/7 yet before an investigation has even begun it basically gets ruled out. Now, I don’t know about you people… but I think thats awfully peculiar.

    Comment by Terance — August 2, 2007 @ 2:02 pm

  14. The fact that you THINK it’s peculiar is what’s peculiar here Terance. It’s not rocket science, it’s engineering. The bridge had already been identified with structural faults, it was exposed to extremes of cold and heat as the seasons change, it was 40 years old, and it was carrying loads much greater than originally designed for. In addition, they were jackhammering the bridge at the time of its collapse, possibly leading to the collapse. Where’s the mystery in that? Does EVERYTHING have to be a conspiracy for you people? Okay fine, Bush, Murdoch, and Bill O’Reilly were playing with dynamite underneath the bridge. . . . .happy now?

    Comment by Alison — August 2, 2007 @ 2:23 pm

  15. Alison, have a cigar and calm yourself. Btw, do you know any engineers who can unequivocally say it wasn’t foul play inside 15 minutes? How about two hours? Hmmm, I would think those engineers you sent to the scene would be fishing people out of the water, eh? Further, how long does it take to get an explosives residue test back? Ahhhh, you surely must understand how Homeland Security jumped the gun. Now, I’m not saying it was intentional.. however I’d rather examine the evidence for myself.. instead of relying on the same people who push the fear card nonstop.

  16. “Okay fine, Bush, Murdoch, and Bill O’Reilly were playing with dynamite underneath the bridge. . . . .happy now?”

Alison you just completely made my day with that one!!!

Do you guys not ever stop to think there is so much day to day “terror” monitoring and awareness behind the scenes that we are not aware of at federal, state, and local levels? Despite what the right would have you believe, the NYT doesn’t share EVERY secret and despite what he left would have you believe, the admin. isn’t just sitting around thinking up ways to bomb the middle east. I think people buy too much into anecdotal politics theories instead of what really goes on. Good grief! And as I said above, terror was never “ruled out,” it has only (as far as I’ve heard) been declared “unlikely.”
