Bridge Collapse: Shep describes the scene…

FNC’s Shepard Smith continues to anchor live from the sight of the Minneapolis bridge collapse this evening. Smith described for viewers what the situation in Minnesota is today:

Back live here in Minneapolis where so many people just about 24 hours ago actually saw the bridge fall. The sights and sounds they will soon not likely forget.

Lots of people in this city are alive today, but sadly they could not save them all and one of the most heartbreaking things we learned this day was that some of the victims who were trapped under all of that debris asked the rescue workers to say goodbye to their loved ones for them.

  1. As much as I like him as an anchor, this on-scene reporting is where he truly shines. I don’t think there’s anyone out there these days who can beat him when it comes to this kind of reporting.

  2. I agree. This is what he does best. He is a funny anchor at times and an excellent jornalist. Its the times between when he isnt being a journalsit and isnt being funny i find him boring.

  3. I totally agree…I was telling a friend today, most anchors talk to the people as just that, an anchor talking to “common people.” Shepard seems to go these tragedies as a personal talking to other people. I hate to use this phrase but he “keeps it real” and gives it everything he’s got.

  4. Is that Ashton Kutcher? May as well be.

  5. I’ve only begun watching Shep in the last year or so but I agree that as funny and off-beat as he can be during his 3pm show, he shows different talents in his 7pm show-more serious–but he’s also just superb in the field and with breaking news. And unlike certain “news anchors” (yeah Keith Olbermann, I’m talking about you)–he actually isn’t afraid to go to a scene and get his hands dirty and really report on a story. I didn’t see him tripping over his own tongue Wednesday night when this story began to break either like Zahn and Olbermann. He was cool, calm, and collected.

  6. I have to pile on the agreement. Shep is so outstanding when he’s in the field reporting. Minneapolis is just the latest example. Israel last year, Hurricane Katrina (any hurricane, really), the Pope’s death (despite announcing it 24 hrs ahead of time!). He is amazing out there.

  7. Jeannie, I view the Pope thing as just being his innate ability to bring us the story first! ;)

  8. I like it when he has that bell on studio B that he rings. And yeah all that other stuff is cool too but THE BELL is number one!

  9. I think his best serious moment was when he was live out side the execution of, I believe, (Timothy McVey). He was allowed to view it as the lone media person or with only a very few others. His description was and comments were next to flawless. Not shabby at all for a “Pretty Boy”.

  10. Yes, Roger, he *does* have serious journalistic credentials. If you can name a major news story in the last decade or so, he’s covered it, usually in person - and doing it better than just about everyone else.

  11. I occassionally watch Fox but when major stories break I go to CNN, but there have been quite a lot a praise for Shepard Smith here, so I’m going to check his show out. Thanks folks.

  12. The problem is his show has got so BORING! They’ve got rid of all the fun for no apparant reason and I’ve stopped watching it because of that…

  13. Why would they cool his jets? He was the hottest male rocket they had over there. Now don’t get any weird ideas about me. I don’t wear lavender, if ya get my drift.
