MSNBC Time Warner NYC channel switch: Good thing or bad thing?
Wired.com’s Adario Strange writes a follow up to a piece on the channel switch where Strange argued it was a less desirable location. Today Strange has reaction from MSNBC’s VP of Communications Jeremy Gaines…
Jeremy Gaines, MSNBC’s VP of Communications said, “The best channel positions in cable are the lower ones, not the higher ones. Our new channel position is fantastic.” This struck as an odd position considering that 1) one of the most successful cable news outlets (Fox News) is on channel 46 (on TimeWarner cable New York), and 2) MSNBC seemed to have no problem with it’s channel 43 location for the last ten years.

Spin, what else to do when your morning show goes from number 2 to barely hanging on to 4 in a 4 horse race… Your competitor forces your channel placement away from the real power position, you Spin. And keep spinning…

I thought that this news (MSNBC to ch 14) was great news…I don’t really see what’s so “bad” about it! The only small bump will be when people search for the channel when it gets moved, but that will be settled quickly because people will find it fast, especially since it moved DOWN the dial (as opposed to UP).

Yeah, that’s the problem MSNBC, it’s your spot on the dial. Sure, that’s what’s wrong with your crap ass network.
Doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that your network is awful.

Where I live, the major channels are all placed from 6-13, with WGN and TBS as 14 and 15. Then there are many shopping channels with some access and a few narrowcasts interspersed (Spanish, BET). The regular channels start up again around 28.
I can’t speak for everybody, but I have to think most people skip or quickly scroll through 15-27. Maybe unwittingly the NBC cable channels are setting themselves up for the quick scroll through too.
