Edwards buys air time on MSNBC to respond to Bush…

John Edwards has bought air time on MSNBC to respond to President Bush’s speech. This will air after before the official Democratic response. I can’t recall the last time a candidate bought air time on a network like that…maybe Lyndon LaRouche in 92? In any case, I predict O’Reilly, who loathes both Edwards and MSNBC, will be dining on this story for weeks (via TVNewser)…

A MESSAGE FROM JOHN EDWARDS ‘08

Tonight, after President Bush makes yet another argument for continuing the war in Iraq, John Edwards will speak directly to the American people in a nationwide address on MSNBC.

Our campaign has bought airtime on MSNBC immediately following the President’s address at 9 p.m., and John Edwards will challenge the President’s remarks with a strong call to the nation to end the war now.

Please watch in that timeframe — and forward this e-mail to your friends, asking them to watch as well. Each of us has a responsibility to make sure that President Bush and Congress understand that the time for excuses has run out. John Edwards will deliver a strong message tonight on our behalf. It’s time to end this war and bring our troops home.

Buying this kind of airtime is expensive. But we believe that President Bush’s address must be countered with a strong voice in opposition to the failed policies that have kept our troops in harm’s way for far too long. Tonight, John Edwards will continue to lead, and make the case to the nation that we cannot wait for an election to change course in Iraq — we as citizens must make Washington understand that the time to end this war is now.

Don’t miss John’s address tonight on MSNBC, immediately following the President.

President Bush will be on every network for free tonight. Our campaign will have to pay for the time on MSNBC so that John Edwards can challenge the President’s failed policies. Please consider making a contribution to the campaign — to help us meet the costs of paying for tonight’s address — and to help John’s campaign continue to grow.

  1. Well, it’s a sure good thing that MSNBC doesn’t take ad money from controversial sources!

  3. More proof that the Democrat’s really don’t want anyone to know what their plan is for the country. Buy time on MSNBC and broadcast to both of the people that watch.

  4. I predict O’Reilly, who loathes both Edwards and MSNBC, will be dining on this story for weeks (via TVNewser)…

Spud: Thus far on the Radio Factor, O’Reilly hasn’t said a word.

So is MSNBC going to carry the Dem response by Senator Jack Reed, or jump right to Edwards? The Edwards press release does not mention the Democratic response.

  5. Update: At 10:09am PT, O’Reilly mentioned the Edwards buy “only in passing,” saying that he should have bought the time on CNN instead of preaching to the choir on MSNBC.

  6. MSNBC probably gave him a big discount and Chris Matthews is probably panting with excitement.

  7. How pathetic on both Edwards part & MSNBC’s. They won’t allow airtime to be bought by soldiers who have a pro-war message, but as long as it fits the ultra-left agenda they’re trying to monopolize, it’s perfectly acceptable.

    Comment by bigred — September 13, 2007 @ 1:45 pm

  8. bigred, totally agree… I’d really like to see someone try to defend why one is okay, but the other is not.

    Comment by ImNotBlue — September 13, 2007 @ 1:56 pm

  9. There is no defending it. If their airwaves are for sale, they should be for sale to both sides and clearly they are not. What does that say about MS-DNC?

  10. Oh, and on a related topic… a story I’m sure we’ll be talking about later:

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/09132007/news/nationalnews/times_gives_lefties_a_hefty_di.htm

According to the NY Post, the NY Times gave a discount for the “Betray Us” MoveOn ad.

    QUOTE:
“A spokesman for MoveOn.org confirmed to The Post that the liberal activist group had paid only $65,000 for the ad - a reduction of more than $116,000.

I wonder how much Edwards is paying… and if he got a discount.

  11. bigred,
Once again you said it perfectly!

    Comment by Cella — September 13, 2007 @ 2:19 pm

  12. Agreed. I’d love to hear MSNBC spin their way out of this one.

    Comment by Missy — September 13, 2007 @ 3:09 pm

  13. Yea Bigred you nailed it ..MSNBC claimed that they wouldn’t run the Pro-War/Troops ad because they didn’t run political ads or some such BS…then they turn around and let Edwards buy air time?..why charge him ? just let him appear on KO’s show it would be the same thing..guess they need the money.

Oh now I’m waiting for the defenders of MSNBC to come in here and try to tell us how MSNBC isn’t just a Pro-Dem Liberal biased news network.

  14. First of all can we trust anything the New York Post says at all?
2nd. Can we trust anything the Post says about the New York Times.
    3rd. vice-versa of two
4th. It is probably bs to create controversy in the never ending New York News War.
5th. Would Bill-O find it ok if Edwards bought time on Fox?
this would help us decide if Bill-O is doing biased bashing or really just complaing why buy on a low-ratings place.

    Comment by Aaron — September 13, 2007 @ 8:20 pm

  15. “First of all can we trust anything the New York Post says at all?”
About as much as the New York times.

“Can we trust anything the Post says about the New York Times.”
About as much as we trust whatever the New York times says about the Post.

“Would Bill-O find it ok if Edwards bought time on Fox?”

As long as FOX wasn’t refusing to air ads from the other side probably he would be ok with it…but in this case MSNBC has been shown to be the hypocrites by giving Edwards unchallenged airtime while refusing airtime for the Pro-War/Troops ad…so Bill has every right to attack it.

    Comment by mlong — September 13, 2007 @ 8:57 pm

  16. The NY Times has admitted they gave MoveOn a discount rate on the ad becuase it was an “advocacy” ad.
