Thursday’s Numbers…

It seems like people were more interested in seeing what O’Reilly had to say last night than what either Rick Sanchez or Keith Olbermann had to say about him as both Out in the Open and Countdown turned in somewhat flat numbers under the circumstances while O’Reilly had over half a million Demo viewers.

  1. LOL! BOR got a higher demo number (LSD) than Rickd “Racism is wrong” Sanchez got in TOTAL viewers!

Also interesting that Abrams’ numbers are starting to soften…I think this is the second day that he’s come in 4th in the timeslot — this time he got beat by Glenn Beck (last time it was DOND…maybe he’ll tell CNBC to move DOND to 10pm now!). He stinks at managing AND hosting a successful show…

  2. And I noticed Nancy beat the “dominant” KO and Racism Rick. What will the excuse be from the Olby fans for this “lock” on second place?

    Comment by eddiebear — September 28, 2007 @ 5:20 pm

  3. Is it possible? Robin & Co. beat out AM in the demo but
only had half the total viewers.

    Comment by A.M. — September 28, 2007 @ 5:23 pm

  4. Yeah I guess so…its mostly just young guys watching Robin or young females watching the studly weather guy.

  5. I switch over when I think she’ll be on the couch..:-)

  6. Maybe I’ll start watching Robin & Co. since none of the “Big 3″ seem to impress me in the mornings. And how much can MSNBC tank before it goes to the Earth’s core?

    Comment by Aaron — September 28, 2007 @ 5:44 pm

  7. Robin is the BEST in the am!

  8. Whew, Olby was maintaining a good streak of consistent seconds. I hope he settles back into his 600k range….

  9. A.M., Quick question. Why does Kiran Chetry keep coughing on the air lately? She has to keep handing off to John to finish reading the prompter. This has happened more than once this week. Have you seen this? Must be one heck of a cold.

  10. I wonder how much of the deflated 8-10 p.m. numbers have to do with the season premieres of the big Thursday shows (Grey’s, Earl, Office, Ugly Betty, etc.)?

    Comment by Fortune Cookie — September 28, 2007 @ 6:26 pm

  11. Olby should implode soon. People just cannot be that stupid.

  12. Third and 4th place finishes with their bash O’Reilly fests. Justice is served.

  13. cd, I’m not sure, it could be an allergy.

  14. So after a week the only thing the Media Matters/MSM attack on O’Reilly has led to is higher ratings for Bill?…Time to drop it guys it’s backfiring…this is not an “Imus moment”. LOL!!!

    Comment by mlong — September 28, 2007 @ 8:05 pm

  15. Sanchez is back at it again tonight. I guess he is going to keep beating this drum until O’Reilly apologizes. And now I ask this-Apologize for what? I have been out around people all day and not one person, black or white, even knew or cared anything about this nonsense. Not only is Cnn the Clinton News Network, but they’re also becoming pretty well known for their race baiting abilities.

    Comment by california dreamin — September 28, 2007 @ 8:19 pm

  16. LOL Gotta love it! Sanchez still won’t address his own guest’s “happy negro” comment about Juan Williams. Instead he got some guy on there to talk about BOR’s inner motivations. The guy didn’t exactly back up Sanchez but instead said it’s about ratings. Wait till RS sees his ratings!

    Comment by flappy — September 28, 2007 @ 9:04 pm

  17. Well I think sanchez looked a little dissappointed in the outcome of the entire deal… Perplexed to why Orielly is attacking so hard. I think he had no idea really who Oriely really is… Oriely just sits and says I did nothing wrong and you all can kiss my ratings!!!

    Comment by clak — September 28, 2007 @ 9:06 pm

  18. Yes, CD, it is allergy season. Many of us are having problems; that’s probably Kiran’s issue as well.

Fortune Cookie, the NBC debuts last night could be a factor (no pun intended). I rarely wander from cable news programming, except for The Office, and I’m sure others may do the same.

But like many of you say, this ratings thing is really backfiring on O’Reilly’s detractors. How funny - Sanchez and Keith are bashing O’Reilly, but people tune in to see BOR instead!!!

Could you imagine the outrage if something happened to O’Reilly? Look at the backlash when Imus was canned; some of you are still lamenting his dismissal to this day. And he had about 1/10 of the TV audience as O’Reilly. I’m sure Fox would never do this to their guy, maybe not for truly noble reasons but because he’s such a cash cow for the network.

  19. Don’t look Rick’s numbers in a vacuum. You need to compare them to Paula Zahn’s numbers. You know that. Remember, Out in the Open gets no pub, no billboards in NYC, no commercials on CNN, etc. BOR watch out brother!

    Comment by Chucky — September 28, 2007 @ 10:32 pm

  20. Hey California (9#)-I too notice Karin’s coughing this week. It seemed to happen at least twice. IMO, it didn’t appear to be a typical cold. It was more of a chocking incident. Although I admit that I’m biased towards kiran, I think she handled both occassions very well. John Roberts appeared to be taken more off guard, and I was just hoping he wouldn’t say anything too dumb. The distinctly different backgrounds between kiran and john are quite are noticeably different. roberts was a big time white correspondent and Kiran obviously learned a lot during her time at F&F’s. I liked the o’briens, but have become a regular viewer of AM. Despite Willie Giest, I can’t handle morning Joe mch of the time. I wish Imus would show up on FBN. I quess we shouldn’t hold our breath.

  22. Uh-oh… Shaun’s unhappy… you better watch out, Spud.

  23. could someone please explain what the demo number (LSD) means, and the “viewers” number, what does the following number in the bracket mean?
    Thanks

    Comment by ontheright — September 29, 2007 @ 1:18 am

  24. Shaun, you truly are deluded. Spud has given no signals that he leans one way or the other. He’s just a straight shooter who tells it like it is.

    Comment by bigred — September 29, 2007 @ 1:36 am

  25. That’s the problem with most liberals, all those cumbersome facts and what not.

    Comment by Lt. Dan — September 29, 2007 @ 2:26 am

  26. Now can we move on to the important issues affecting our nation like Janeane Garafalo’s body language and a Target clerk in Sheboygan who says “Happy Holidays” to customers?!

Also, while Paul Anka is a big star to the O’Reilly demographic, he hardly qualifies as a TV icon. His biggest contribution to television was writing “Johnny’s Theme” (noted in a graphic but not discussed). There’s an interesting backstory there because Anka shrewdly gave Carson a bogus songwriting credit so that Johnny would OK the song as the “Tonight Show” theme.

    Comment by chalmers — September 29, 2007 @ 8:40 am

  27. Actually, this is an IMUS moment. O’Reilly is getting a lot of attention, and people are tuning in to watch. IMUS’ numbers skyrocketed right before they fired him. Had MSNBC not caved in, IMUS would have some strong numbers. The numbers would have gone through the roof if NBC had kept him around and CBS would have fired him… NBC doesn’t have any guts. The same thing is happening to O’Reilly, but FOX has guts and they WON’T BE FIRING HIME ANYTIME SOON.

The best way to make his numbers go down, is to just ignore the guy and stop bringing him up. That includes Keith Olbermann… just ignore him, and stop giving him publicity… his numbers were on the way down until this happened, and then they went right back up. Bill O’Reilly is probably thanking Keith Olbermann right now for the spike in numbers.

    Comment by Nobody — September 29, 2007 @ 9:05 am

  28. I agree with those of you slamming O’Reilly’s “culture” and body language segments. They detract from the main genre of his program, which is to discuss controversies and politics, I believe.

Same with MSNBC. I could never understand how one network could report news most of the time, yet go to those “Headliners and Legends” specials at others. Two separate audiences watch these two very different types of programs.

So when a cable news outlet shifts their programming to tabloid, I’m gone. I’m sure many other cable news watchers would do the same.

    Comment by Missy — September 29, 2007 @ 9:19 am

  29. I’m with you, Missy. I don’t read much of the stuff about Katie Couric, so maybe someone has asked something like this, but I haven’t seen it: “Do you think people aren’t watching you cover stories like the Iraq War because for the last ten years you covered stories like the final ‘Friends’ episode as if it were as important as a world war?”

    Comment by chalmers — September 29, 2007 @ 10:28 am

  30. This is NOT Bill O’Reilly’s Imus moment despite what the MoveOn and MediaMatters group would have you to believe. And you people are on Acid if you think that Fox would ever dream of firing the man, especially when what the Keith Olbermanns and Rick Sanchezes of this world are reporting about him, about this incident, are being taken so wildly out of context.

    Comment by Alison — September 29, 2007 @ 10:57 am

  31. chalmers: Why all the bad mouthing of Paul Anka?

Did you have a cheating girlfriend named “Diana?” :)

    Comment by Ira — September 29, 2007 @ 1:24 pm

  32. 27. His numbers were way down? Please, do tell?

    Comment by Tom P — September 29, 2007 @ 2:48 pm

  33. Ira: Let’s just say I’m doing it My Way. I have nothing against Paul Anka (whom I once heard give an extremely honest and entertaining interview to Howard Stern). If Bill wants to label him as a music icon, that’s fine. However, “spinning” him into a TV icon because of an American Bandstand appearance is not a lovely way to honor the man :)
