To CUME or not to CUME…

TVNewser posts a set of CUME numbers and then says they’re not used for sales purposes. Well if they’re not used for sales purposes why are they being posted? Ratings are there for sales purposes, not as a talking point or programming tool.

But then later on he has someone saying they’re not just a talking point. How so? In what way? We aren’t told.

Whose is really the oldest show…

Big Head D.C. fact checks Michael Starr and finds trouble…

The high-decibel Matthews holds a unique niche now, what with Hardball cable’s longest-running political debate show following the demise of CNN’s Crossfire.”

Celebrating 10 years is indeed something to note, but Starr did not allow himself the necessary fact-checking to see that Hardball is cable’s second longest-running political debate show. On October 7, FOX News’ Hannity & Colmes, will celebrate 11 years… Fuzzy math, Mr. Starr.

Tom Sullivan to FBN…

The Sacramento Bee’s Sam McManis writes about Tom Sullivan heading to NYC to cohost a morning finance show on FBN…

It’s official: Tom Sullivan is going to New York.

The popular KFBK (1530 AM) talk radio host confirmed Tuesday what The Bee had earlier reported — that he will be co-hosting a morning show on the fledgling Fox Business Network, beginning Oct. 15.

“It’s all business, all the time, but it’s not going to be like CNBC,” Sullivan said, announcing his intentions on KFBK’s afternoon news.

“CNBC had it all to themselves. And they talked to the bankers and the brokers. But there’s 99 percent of the people out there who want to know what to do with their money, that don’t get the information. So we’re going to do a lot differently on the Fox Business Network.”

Donny Deutsch profile…

The New York Observer’s Felix Gillette profiles CNBC’s Donny Deutsch…

“What I love about the show is that now we call it ‘the daily Roadmap to the American Dream,’” Mr. Deutsch enthused. Daytime television was a major influence. “During the day there is so much Help Television,” he said. “Yet at night, there is nothing on anywhere that is utilitarian and inspiring. People can be very educated, a businessperson, and affluent—you still need inspiration.”

For CNBC’s long-term hopes of holding off Mr. Murdoch, what’s just as important is that Mr. Deutsch’s particular Roadmap to the American Dream covers regions of the country far from Wall Street. These days, The Big Idea features a rotating cast of upbeat entrepreneurs—ordinary-looking folks you’ve never heard of who made it big in niche underwear, or homemade maple syrup, or mail-order bouncy balls—and whose eureka moments came not in a New York boardroom but in an Omaha basement or on a Tuscaloosa bar stool.

One by one, they talk about quitting their soulless day jobs, borrowing money from friends, and taking out second mortgages. The stories begin in different places (corporate cubicles, dentist offices, airport lobbies) but they inevitably reach the same endpoint: that euphoric feeling of entrepreneurial success. Above it all presides Mr. Deutsch, the Queens-born kid who conquered Manhattan.

Update: Here’s a table showing the number of scratches the Big Idea had in the 3rd Quarter (based on Live ratings)…

Forbes on Fox panelist Jim Michaels passes away…

Jim Michaels, the Editor of Forbes Magazine from 1961-1999 — and the senior panelist for FNC’s “Forbes on Fox” Saturday business program, passed away last night. He was 86. According to one FNC staffer who worked closely with Jim, he “lived every bit of his life to the fullest”. “Forbes on Fox” will present a special tribute to Michaels on Saturday at 11 am ET on FNC.

Imus to return to radio…

Newsday’s Neil Best writes that Don Imus’ radio vacation looks to be over soon…

Imus fans: Your wait is almost over!

Citadel Broadcasting is close to finalizing a contract with Don Imus that would bring the controversial radio host back to the airwaves, a person familiar with the discussions said Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear from where Imus would be heard, but Citadel owns WABC in New York, making its morning slot a logical destination. It also owns WPLJ-FM.

“This is the book interview from hell! This is the worst interview I’ve ever had in my life!”

(via The Daily Show’s website)

I’ll second that comment by Chris Matthews. This is the worst interview ICN has seen since Dennis Miller memorably ignored Eric Alterman on CNBC a few years ago. Thanks to an emailer for the original tip and another for the embed link.

CNN to air Planet in Peril…

CNN put out a release talking about its upcoming mega HD two night documentary Planet In Peril airing on October 23rd and 24th at 9pm ET…

In a sweeping four-hour documentary about the threats to the world’s environment, Planet in Peril takes viewers to places where environmental change is not a theory or just a future forecast, but a crisis happening in real time.

Bringing viewers the stories behind the statistics, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Animal Planet host and wildlife biologist Jeff Corwin will focus on four main issues that threaten the planet and its inhabitants: climate change, deforestation, species loss and overpopulation. Planet in Peril, filmed across four continents and 13 countries, airs over two nights on CNN/U.S. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, and Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. (ET/PT) and globally on CNN International.

“Some documentaries convey alarming statistics and others utilize stunning cinematography, but Planet in Peril brings it all together,” said Jon Klein, president of CNN/U.S. “This is a comprehensive and thorough evaluation of the state of our planet. We bring viewers right to the heart of the issue with CNN’s global perspective.”

Still more on the “Happy Negro” incident…

The Hill’s Betsy Rothstein interviews Juan Williams on Boycy Watkins’ “happy negro” crack that was used twice on CNN…

Rick Sanchez of CNN, who hosted the show, appeared on Howard Kurtz’s “Reliable Sources” and was asked why he didn’t challenge the comment. Sanchez called Williams a “professional,” and said he wishes Watkins hadn’t made the remark.

Williams told ITK that he’s angry CNN did nothing to counter Watkins’s remark. “I know people at CNN,” said Williams, who worked at CNN before moving over to Fox News. “I have a reputation in this town. I have written books that chronicle the civil rights movement. [CNN] should have the decency to do something. … It’s not for me to go begging them.

“I find it deeply offensive, but I think it’s typical of people who would rather attack my character and essentially call me an Uncle Tom rather than engage [in] the debate of what’s happening with race relations in this country.”

Williams was not offended when O’Reilly said his grandmother was afraid of black people. “Don’t say your grandmother’s prejudiced,” Williams assured. “She’s acting on the information she has been given.”

10 years of Hardball: Party time…

The New York Post’s Michael Starr notes that there’s going to be a big party celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Hardball in D.C. tomorrow night…

The high- decibel Matthews holds a unique niche now, what with “Hardball” cable’s longest- running po litical debate show following the demise of CNN’s “Cross fire.” (And being lampooned on “SNL” by Darrell Ham mond for the last seven years isn’t too shabby.)

Tomorrow night’s fete will be held at Decatur House - with Sen. Ted Kennedy, Pat Buchanan, Kelly O’Don nell, Gloria Borger, Jim Bell and many others expected.
