Too bad Fred Thompson is limiting his access to people who will softball questions and such.
Comment by FishOil — October 3, 2007 @ 7:17 pm
FishOil: Sort of like Barack Obama appearing on Tyra Banks?
Comment by Ira — October 3, 2007 @ 8:08 pm
Ira: Yes, the comparison is valid.
My point is that at this stage in the game (about 3 months before the primary voting starts) people are going to want to see an interview with Thompson that gets answers to even semi-difficult questions, not the rah-rah leading questions from Hannity.
Comment by FishOil — October 3, 2007 @ 8:20 pm
I think Thompson is playing by his own rules, not the media’s and some people who can’t think outside the box just can’t handle that…it works well for him.

I’m still waiting for Thompson to do something other than drawl some banalities and platitudes. Where are the specifics to any of his proposals, stances, ideals?
Why do Fredheads come off like a bunch of cultists who never question anything their leader says and does?
Comment by Amused — October 3, 2007 @ 10:18 pm
These “Fredheads” are very defense of their candidate, and I’m sorry to say it seems like they’re just impressed with his Law and Order character, which of course has given him huge name-recognition. Whenever I ask them (online, of course) why his positions are are more valid than are those of others (my guy Hunter, for example), I just get the standard “he is the only one with a chance to win” answer.
So beware of the Fredheads; they are fiercely loyal to the guy.

“defensive”, not “defense”
Comment by Missy — October 3, 2007 @ 11:51 pm
so what if Fred is an actor, what about the other “characters”?
Comment by ditmar — October 4, 2007 @ 12:36 am
Missy, the difference between Fred and the others are that he doesn’t pander to anyone. If you watched the interview, you notice he lashed back at James Dobson, which would be a no-no for most Republicans who would do anything for the evangelical vote.
He also holds true to his Federalist views on the marriage amendment… saying it should be a state-by-state issue.
Not everyone who votes Republican wants to hear that, but he doesn’t pander and that’s what I like about him. He’s real.
Comment by bigred — October 4, 2007 @ 12:42 am
Thank you, bigred. That’s what I mean by he doesn’t play by the rules…and that scares people. To me, he’s more of an independent than any other candidate. You can’t fit him into a neat little compartment and he bends over for no party or organization. As I said above, the media is scared of him because he’s so powerful and they can’t control it…even so-called “right-wing” media, but a lot of them are coming around.
I also can’t believe people are still saying he is liked because of a character he played. That’s ridiculous, if not naive. (Keeping sort of on topic, didn’t MSNBC do a piece about a racist character he played and how that might effect his run? Geez.) People like him because he’s real as bigred said.
Comment by Sarah — October 4, 2007 @ 1:41 am
I guess I see what you’re saying about him being “real”, when compared w/Romney and Giuliani, who seem to be able to change their opinions and not deeply held beliefs when convenient. But I’m comparing him w/Duncan Hunter, who has tons of experience in Congress, headed up the House Armed Services Committee, built part of the border fence near San Diego and has very well established principles on most subjects. The only thing he lacks is name recognition (kind of a big deal if running for President).
So I’ll probably go w/Thompson or one of the others if Hunter drops out. But I’m still with him until that time.

All politicians are actors.
Comment by Alison — October 4, 2007 @ 8:59 am
I am backing Thompson 100% and I have NEVER, EVER watched a single episode of Law & Order. Please, that comment about only like FDT because of Law & Order is selling Fred short and insulting the intelligence of his supporters.
Comment by Olivia — October 4, 2007 @ 9:05 am
Olivia, I’m not trying to insult his supporters. I think I know what he stands for; it’s just that I’m looking to see what he’s accomplished in his career. If he ends up being the nominee, I will support him, but I’m not ready to do so yet.
Comment by Missy — October 4, 2007 @ 9:27 am
A little off topic, but that little girl of his is adorable. I was impressed because he sat there holding her and letting her wiggle and squirm all during his talk. I didn’t even know he had a baby boy. I am going to be looking real closely at him and I wish he would get out there more so others could do the same.
Comment by sophia — October 4, 2007 @ 10:02 am
OK, Fredheads: Please tell us some concrete issues/plans/proposals that Fred has laid out thus far. I’m tired of goober homilies and vague platitudes substituting for substance.
By the way, does anyone else get creeped out at the thought of Jeri getting into the sack with that wrinkly geezer?
Comment by Amused — October 4, 2007 @ 10:50 am
Very mature, “Amused,” though I expect nothing less.
If you are really interested in what Thompson stands for, take a few minutes from your GK & SS “fan sites” and look it up. This isn’t the time or the place.
Comment by Ge-Ge — October 4, 2007 @ 3:47 pm
GeGe, I asked the same question, and I don’t think we’re trying to start trouble. While Thompson may have a good position on many important issues, his accomplishments seem quite scant. I’m sure you’ve heard that’s why governors, and not senators, are typically elected President, because of the executive experience governors gain while in office in running a state and solving many of its problems. Senators just write legislation and debate.
Again, no one is trashing Fred, we are just asking for his accomplishments to date.
Comment by Missy — October 4, 2007 @ 8:32 pm
Missy, I’d like to know more about what Fred stands for as well, but there is no need for Amused to refer to him as an ‘wrinkly geezer’ or about his wife being in bed with him. THAT has nothing to do with what he stands for.
Comment by Currently Available — October 4, 2007 @ 11:20 pm
Fair enough, CA. I hope you’ll accept my regrets for that.
I do think that they look kind of jarring as a couple and if he does become the GOP candidate that will almost certainly be an issue that the opposition will use against him.
Comment by Amused — October 4, 2007 @ 11:40 pm
Missy, I wasn’t implying YOU were trying to start trouble and I don’t doubt your sincerity.
However, I felt “Amused’s” comments were completely out of line and immature but as I said, I expect nothing less.
And if that’s the worst thing people can say about Thompson, then by all means, who cares? At least it’s only his second wife.
