  1. Dan’s holding up his solid 5th place slot.

    Comment by Jim — October 12, 2007 @ 5:10 pm

  2. So Larry King & Stephen Colbert beat the comedy team of Hannity & Colmes…

    Comment by Dmuse — October 12, 2007 @ 5:25 pm

  3. Is it just me or has O’Reilly’s audience grown since the smear campaign against him? Yesterday’s number was especially high, with no exceptional programming to account for it.

Greta had an amazing show last night, with the Rita Cosby exclusives. I’m surprised the numbers aren’t more impressive.

    Comment by Haile Welde — October 12, 2007 @ 5:27 pm

  4. And Old Keith keeps sucking wind. Even Nancy Grace beat him.
Poor Keith and MSNBC. They just don’t get it.

    Comment by Bill — October 12, 2007 @ 5:48 pm

  5. #3: I’m hoiping that the reason for Greta not having higher numbers is the fact that people are tired of these types of stories but probably low numbers across the board due to baseball.

  6. Bill, your an idiot. Check the facts.

    Comment by randy — October 12, 2007 @ 6:09 pm

  7. #4: Which “smear” site did you pull that from? The ratings for “Countdown” are one of the biggest stories in cable news this year. Spud will correct me if I’m off, but I believe with 800-900,000 total viewers and 300-400,000 in the demo, Keith is up an INCREDIBLE 50%. I’m hoping O’Reilly starts his “War On Thanksgiving” soon.

  8. I see American Morning is nipping at FOX & Friends’ heels..

    Comment by A.M. — October 12, 2007 @ 6:17 pm

  9. A.M., I’ll bet there are days when viewers switch between Robin & Co. and AM. The numbers seem to indicate that might be happening. AM catching FOX & Friends? I don’t think it will ever be a real threat. Go back to last year at this time, and you will see that AM, with Soledad and Miles, had some days where they were this close if not closer to FOX & Friends. The new co-hosts are holding the status quo, but is that justification enough to get rid of established anchors like the O’Briens? I don’t see the reasoning that Klein used for this big shift. Maybe he just wanted some new faces in the morning and didn’t actually think the ratings would improve with the switch. I don’t think Klein had anywhere else to put Kiran.

  10. cd, ALl good points. Was it Klein who hired Soledad? Perhaps he just wanted his own people anchoring the
    morning show.

Kiran looked a bit worn out today.

    Comment by A.M. — October 12, 2007 @ 6:46 pm

  11. A.M., I did some research on this, and found that Soledad and Miles started their AM stint in June of 2005. Jon Klein was Cnn President at that time.

    Comment by california dreamin — October 12, 2007 @ 7:12 pm

  12. I know it’s common practice to blame Kiran for AM’s low ratings, but that John Roberts is quite a stiff. I’m sure he’s a very competent journalist, but he’s way too serious, and it seems that people would rather have someone a little more fun on in the a.m.

I can’t imagine him having “chemistry” with anyone, except maybe Barbara Starr or Andrea Mitchell. His personality seems more well suited for an evening news spot.

    Comment by Missy — October 12, 2007 @ 9:41 pm

  13. Phebe, I stand corrected on Miles and Soledad.
Now, about this rumor. Just what are you implying?

    Comment by california dreamin — October 12, 2007 @ 9:57 pm

  14. Missy, I completely agree. I think Kiran is good in the morning, but it’s John Roberts who I can’t watch. They should give John Roberts one of Wolf Blitzer’s hours, and replace him with some who better suits Kiran’s personality. I like Kiran, and think that she lights up the screen whenever she’s on. I feel that John Roberts and “the most news in the morning” thing is the main problem with American Morning.

    Comment by Lark22 — October 12, 2007 @ 10:02 pm

  15. cd,Phebe, I just copied this from Soledad’s bio at CNN:

O’Brien joined CNN in July 2003 as the co-anchor of the network’s flagship morning program, American Morning

Klein started his position at CNN Nov. 2004…I’m guessing since he hired both JR and Kiran, he wanted them in and the “O’Brien’s” out.

    Comment by A.M. — October 12, 2007 @ 10:43 pm

  16. I expected Greta’s numbers to be a little higher too, with the Rita Cosby tapes. I’m really surprised at H&C’s numbers, I wonder if it has anything to do with Rich Lowery’s filling in for Sean.

    Comment by Laurel — October 12, 2007 @ 10:52 pm

  17. WOW!! BOR’s numbers are way down apparently.

    Comment by randy — October 13, 2007 @ 11:24 am

  18. And how did you come to that conclusion, randy? Lets take a look at this weeks numbers posted on ICN thus far:

    Mon: 1,955,000 viewers (488,000) LSD: 1,976,000 viewers (501,000)
    Tue: 2,402,000 viewers (567,000) LSD: 2,418,000 viewers (582,000)
    Wed: 2,493,000 viewers (562,000) LSD: 2,532,000 viewers (579,000)
    Thu: 2,200,000 viewers (493,000) LSD: 2,220,000 viewers (503,000)

So, what exactly are you talking about?

    Comment by ImNotBlue — October 13, 2007 @ 1:58 pm

  19. John Roberts is not good on AM. He was solid when he did evening reports for CNN. It’s also true that some of the most successful morning shows rarely delve into “the news”. Successful morning shows have a lot of “news” about my shoes, my hair, how i drive my car, the weather man who isn’t, and that sports guy who never watched a game. I really don’t like any morning shows because they try to act too giddy. American Morning is sadly (and how is this possible for a morning show) too newsy.

  20. Well Inb, I was the emailer in the new topic by spud. On Leno, BOR pedalled the same lie that he averages 4 million viewers. So, I guess that means that he has been doing awful.

    Comment by randy — October 13, 2007 @ 2:27 pm

  21. Soledad was on BEFORE Miles was added in June of 2005. Check that again cd.

There is a rumor as to why Kiran has that position but since we can’t post information that can’t be verified, I’ll keep it to myself.

Hi Mary Snow. Bye Mary Snow…

    Comment by Spud — October 13, 2007 @ 2:42 pm

  22. LOL

    Comment by Anonymous — October 13, 2007 @ 3:59 pm

  23. #21, I do notice that BOR always claims he has 4 million viewers, when we usually see him with around 2 million plus in the 8pm slot. Then I realized that he includes the audience for the 11pm and 4am reruns. Do those numbers actually count in the ratings battles?

    Comment by kevin — October 14, 2007 @ 10:43 am

  24. kevin, please see the Leno thread. He isn’t mentioning the 4mil in the context of a ratings battle with the other cable news networks. He’s just stating a fact of how many actually view him, to say his show is a good opportunity for candidates to come on and get their message out.

    Comment by Haile Welde — October 14, 2007 @ 7:32 pm

  25. The fact is, Fox News is still King of The Hill by a long way and so Fox haters are looking into any number they can to see if there is any weakness, as the numbers speak, looks like Fox just keeps getting stronger.

    Comment by Gary — October 15, 2007 @ 4:42 pm

  26. You said it Gary. All the losers fail to bring down the king so they twist reality into a pretzel just to make themselves feel better.

    Comment by flappy — October 15, 2007 @ 11:28 pm

  27. Happy to see Olbermann gaining new viewers, i can’t stand anything else on that network. I used to watch AM when Soledad was on but I can’t stand how fake Kiran is. Katie, Meridith, Diane, Robin R… they all seem to be kind hearted , compassionate and relatable women… I remeber how immature and rude Kiran could be on FOX and I just can’t take her seriously.
