Olbermann hosts Harry Potter event…

Entertainment Weekly’s Tina Jordan writes about J.K. Rowling appearing at a Harry Potter event hosted by Keith Olbermann at Carnegie Hall last night. Interesting host selection…

By 7:00 everyone was seated, the red-jacketed ushers were shushing and closing the box doors, and the event host, MSNBC news anchor Keith Olbermann, took the stage. But not center stage, which was dominated by an enormous, velvet-upholstered, carved wooden chair — a throne, really — planted on a Persian carpet. Gesturing to it, Olbermann joked, “That’s not sufficient for someone who’ll be signing that many copies” — a reference to the fact that, after the reading, Rowling would be signing a copy of Hallows for every single sweepstakes winner.

The crowd was polite to Olbermann, but when a smiling Rowling finally strode on stage, perfectly blonded and coiffed, fingernails shellacked to a brilliant red, stilettos clicking, they went absolutely mad, screaming, jumping to their feet, even crying. Gently, in true mom fashion, she shushed them, and began to read from the seventh book.

  2. “Harry! Harry! Harr— Keith Olbermann? Who? Harry! Harry!”

  3. It says a lot that his primary interest in literature seems to be in kiddie lit! Yeah I can just see Edward R. Murrow hosting an event for a kiddie author can’t you? What a joke that man is.

  4. why is he a ‘joke’ for hosting an event he was no doubt invited to do so for a decent sum of money? If you’re going to extol more of your depressing and predicable vitriol, at least justify it.

Murrow did a few odd things too in his day. He interviewed a dog once didn’t he?

  6. Olbermann is no Edward R. Murrow despite his fans desperate attempts to try and push that theory. And knowing what a geek Olbermann is, I’m sure he did the “event” for free. He’s that dumb.

  7. Isn’t it kind of creepy that a middle-aged man is such a Harry Potter fanatic?

  8. Olbermann is no Edward R. Murrow despite his fans desperate attempts to try and push that theory.

Night after night in 1940, Edward R. Murrow risked his life covering the Na*i air bombardment of London. How can Keith, or mostly anyone else on the current scene for that matter, come even remotely close to that type of reporting?

  9. Why would any credible newsperson want to use someone else’s tagline anyway? Just shows me the degree of low self esteem Kiethie has. He’s so ashamed of who he is, he is trying to be Edward R. Murrow. Very sad indeed. There is something so incredibly wrong with Mr. Olberman…he needs some serious help. And those who say that KO is the Edward R. Murrow of our times obviously knows nothing about the man. For if they did, they’d know that Mr Murrow was, above all, respectful to others, and especially to the President of the United States. Kieth only respects those he admires, which isn’t very many people and shows great disdain and bias to those he disagrees with. Like I said, Murrow didn’t discriminate in this area. If anyone studies him, they’d know that. And this is just one major difference in the two. I feel sorry for KO. He’s a very sick puppy.

  10. At least K.O. wasn’t ousted as keynote speaker for by the National Center for Missing and Exploited children. Not only that, but the parents of Shawn Hornbeck recently appeared on Countdown to denounce the despicable comments of Bill O’Reilly about their son.

Stephen, I had barely heard of Murrow until this blog and care less about any comparisons made by a few people who write for a living. As far as his “tagline” goes, that is called paying respect to somebody he admired. I suppose you also have a problem with professional athletes who wear the numbers of their childhood heroes as well.

By the way Stevie, contrary to what your favorite radio pundit may have told you, respect is earned and is not an entitlement of the office you hold. I sh*t on Mister Bush and his legacy.

  12. “I had barely heard of Murrow…”

An educated precipitant as always, El.

“…respect is earned and is not an entitlement of the office you hold…”

Police officers, fire fighters, rescue workers, teachers, principals, doctors, and nurses. All respected on their position… even before their accomplishments are known.

See, you hate anyone who disagrees with you… it has nothing to do with accomplishments or position. Just a selfish desire to always be right… and proud bigotry towards anyone who dares differ.

  13. It’s been obvious here for ages that many people dislike KO. I’m not a fan of the man at all but the tone of the posts on this thread surprise me. Actually not the tone as much as the fact that THIS post generated the regular KO bashing posts. It’s not about something he said or did on his program but merely the fact he was asked to and did host this HP event.

  14. I’m not exactly a fan of Bill O’Reilly’s either but at least he’s not trying to host kiddie events.

  15. I kinda agree with myview… I’m no fan of KO… not even close. Nor am I fan of Harry Potter. But I hardly think it’s a bad thing that he hosted this event. I mean, I hardly think this hurts him in any way? He’s a fan, a semi-celebrity… so why not?

  16. Elmonica,
    “I sh*t on Mr. Bush.”
That should be easy for you, because you’re full of it.

These, “my Dad is better than yours,” comebacks are always fun to read. They have no value, but they are fun.
“As far as his “tagline” goes, that is called paying respect to somebody he admired. I suppose you also have a problem with professional athletes who wear the numbers of their childhood heroes as well.” For you sake I hope that someday you will acquire the wisdom to know the difference between wearing an Athletes number, and a professional TV anchor mimicking another anchor.
“I sh*t on Mister Bush and his legacy.”
Of course you do, you’re an admirer of Keith Olberman. I’d expect no less.

There’s a big difference between some of the worst people in world history… and a biased talk show host.

    Let’s not lose perspective, people.

Yea just testing…..but when the supporters of KO call the same names to Bush I dont see that “simmer” stuff from KO-or anyone in fact in the media. (except for FOX of course)

  23. I’d suspect that Keith’s girlfriend got him interested in the Harry Potter series, as she’s just about the age of the target audience. Maybe he reads it to her each night before tucking her into bed…
