Returning to the issue of drawing conclusions from the recent polling data,
Fox News management should be commended for their brilliance in identifying a niche in the news market place and capitalizing on it. They recognized the presence of a highly partisan, highly ideological segment of our society who shunned the watching of movies and television shows (due to their contempt for Hollywood), and who at the same time were not avid book readers (to say the least). They responded by producing news-opinion shows that reflected their targeted audience’s values and Fox Management has been rewarded handsomely with a loyalty that extends beyond Fox News, carrying over to the Fox network and its affiliates.
What is so humorous about all this is that Fox’s viewers regularly trumpet the ratings victory of their favorite shows as proof that the political message espoused by Fox News is somehow more popular to the American public. The truth is that the people who are more inclined to watch CNN, MSNBC and HLN are more likely to watch movies, t.v. dramas, and comedy shows OR to turn the television off altogether in order to read a book.
I think it is fair to say that aside from the viewpoint of Fox management and their shareholders, any victory by Fox News in the ratings race is at best a hollow one, that its viewers should accept with an embarrassing humility. I for one will now view the ratings race in a totally different light because CNN, MSNBC and HLN will never be able to compete with the narrow-minded mentality of the Fox News collective.
P.s. There are always exceptions. If you happen to be one, congratulations - you don’t need to tell me you finished reading Bill O’Reilly’s latest book.

So were supposed to believe all that crap from a Norman Lear website?..yea thats not a biased source of information.
But it’s fun watching how much FOX bugs the hell out of the Left…they control over 90% of the media and yet there’s that one 10% they can’t control and it drives them batty. LOL!!!

I agree most CNN and HLN watchers are content to sit at home and read a book…whine about Fox News and act superior. Myself I have watched Fox since the first day it came on the air and intend to keep watching. I can assure you that Fox News viewers are just as well educated or cultured as any you will find at CNN or HLN. We are just not as gulliable.

Why are all of you far left wingers so upset by FOX? Don’t pay any attention to Bill. Watch all the other mainstream networks that take their marching orders from move on, then at the end of the day you will hear what you want! Oh my, their is only problem with this, you won’t hear the truth!

Morning Joe had a nice bump on Tuesday. Probably due to Mika’s interview with Michele Obama that they plugged on Monday and ran a few different times during the show on Tuesday.

Hating Fox isnt a far left thing. I’m a liberal, not a far left loon. I dont believe 9/11 was an inside job, I dont believe that President Bush maliciously lied to the American people about Iraq, and I cannot stand anybody who compares Cheney and Bush to Hitler or others like him. But I still hate fox. So because of that trait, does that make me a far left loon? Even BOR said today that most liberals arent far left loons.

Wow, El… you really like that study. And I like that you’re trying to use real evidence to back up your loony theories. It’s not good evidence… clearly biased, misleading, and unreliable… but at least you’re starting to understand the idea of research.
With that in mind, let me ask a few questions to you… based on what you wrote:
1- You said there is a “highly partisan, highly ideological segment of our society who shunned the watching of movies and television shows” because they have “contempt for Hollywood.” Why is that? Why do these people hate Hollywood so much?
2- You say that the audience was not avid book readers… what is the evidence for that claim? How do you explain that many of those featured on FNC are also best selling authors? How do you explain Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity’s successful writing careers? Success which far surpasses the clearly limited success of their liberal counterparts, like Keith Olbermann. What does that say about liberal “readers?”
3- How does your notion that FOX Management has been “rewarded handsomely with a loyalty that extends beyond Fox News, carrying over to the Fox network” fit in with the previous idea that FOX viewers don’t watch movies of television shows?
4- Additionally, how do you explain that FOX (not FNC, but broadcast FOX) has many shows that don’t fit into the “family values” you believe the management demands. Programs like “The Simpsons,” “Family Guy,” all those sleazy reality programs, and let us not forget the original FOX hit, “Married With Children.” They certainly don’t fit the mould you feel FOX calls for, yet they are some of the biggest money makers for News Corp.
5- If people who are more inclined to watch CNN, MSNBC, or HLN choose not to, because they’re watching other non-news programming, doesn’t that suggest that they are less informed? You seem to suggest (for example) that they would be more likely to know the name of cast from “Grey’s Anatomy” then say, the names of those running for president. Is that something really to be proud of?
6- If the consistent ratings victory by FNC should be considered “hollow,” how do you explain that FNC not only beats the other networks individually, by frequently collectively? If FNC can pull in bigger numbers than all those networks combined, doesn’t that prove there is a bigger audience for FNC’s product, than there is for the rest?
So I suppose this is really the bottom line of your post and the “study” you’ve linked to: Those who don’t watch FNC are uninformed and uninterested in news and information, as demonstrated by the small numbers who would actually tune into a news broadcast… while FNC viewers are numerous and more concerned the current state of the world, preferring news analysis programming, to the latest work of mass produced fiction.
Well, that sure does explain a lot. I just don’t understand why you, of all people, would be proud of that.

Seems like everyone’s numbers are up. Must be the writer’s strike.

The time shift numbers are interesting, especially with CNN and CNBC’s time shift numbers being so small. I wonder if anyone has done any solid research into that market share for cable news, as the entertainment arm is playing catch-up with who is time shifting, and what demographic they are in.
And Demographics drive ad rates, which is the bottom line.
