Shepard Smith signs mega deal with FNC…
Drudge is reporting that Shepard Smith has signed a new deal with FNC for 7 million a year. Well that is certainly going to set a bar for talent across cable news…

good. I like shep. He should have a nightly news show on Fox broadcast.

He’s worth it. Anchors 2 shows and goes everywhere for breaking news stories. He’s a personality you don’t want to let get away. Heh, I rarely watch his shows and I’m giving him this much praise but I know he’s good.

He deserves it. Shepard Smith is the reason I started watching Fox News.

Well if this is what they give Smith I can’t wait to hear what O’Reilly’s next contract will be whenever that comes up.

wow, what a ripoff.

Shep is fabulous. I began watching him during Hurricane Katrina. I’m not much of a Fox fan outside of the two hours Shep hosts each day but he’s worth every cent.

$7 million, eh? Olbermann must feel bad right about now.

Shep is the best and I agree with Chase…he should do a nightly show on Fox. I think he is so much better than the 3 newscasters on ABC, CBS and NBC. Way to go Shep!!

Shep deserves every single dollar he earns. Two shows a day, a nightly broadcast that has been #1 since 2000, he is reporting on breaking news almost instantly, he shows no strong political slant, he has been at FNC even before it was truly recognized and knows how to mix hard news with humor. If he ever left FNC, I think I would stop watching. Congrats to Shep!

Yes, he is worth every cent. Congratulations Shep!!!
And I hope this is a long-term contract; he fits in so well at Fox. I hope he stays there for years to come.

I wonder, how much was he getting prior to this?
Anyhow, Shepard is definitely worth some money to the network considering he’s their defacto anchor for virtually any story happening anywhere. With that known, how does this paycheck compare to the Couric/Gibson/Williams group?
Comment by Chris (clind) — November 19, 2007 @ 12:57 am
He now makes about as much as Williams and Gibson and a bit less than Couric. He also generates between 1/5-1/7 of their audience which isn’t to say that he wouldn’t draw similar number if he anchored a news program on the FOX Broadcast network.

At first i thought this was a bit steep, and im sure shep would agree its stupid amounts of money. However i think its justified, one of the networks would snap him up and pay that amount should he come on the market, and Fox recognise that.
If it wasn’t for Shepard Smith i wouldn’t be at Journalism school now. If it wasn’t for Shep i wouldn’t be watching Fox. He won me over the day Micheal Jackson was re-arrested in 2003?.

If it wasn’t for Shepard Smith i wouldn’t be at Journalism school now.
Craig: That is a curious comment because these days in the US, J-schools are more interested in teaching “advocacy journalism” i.e., “making the word a better place” then reporting basic the facts of a story.
Comment by Ira — November 19, 2007 @ 1:49 pm
Well i only started this year, but so far alot of emphases has been put on reporting the facts as they are. Its quite hard and i often have to hold myself back.
Its not the job of the Journalist to make the world a better place.

Ira, I think current journalism schools only give the impression they’re teaching biased reporting. In my experience (I wasn’t a journalism major, but I worked all the college newscasts for four years, and TA’ed for a few journalism profs.) the professors themselves teach solid reporting techniques. However, the surroundings… the college itself, becomes more of an influence on the “what” to report on.
My school was/is a hippie factory… and you don’t say “Republican” unless you’ve got some good strong cover… but the journalism professors (in general) didn’t represent that. It was people like the Dean, the school President, and the other students who knew what they were looking for, and were able to push their ideologies on the J-students. At least, that was my experience.

I’m a journalism major and my experience is the opposite. I’ve had two professors this semester alone rail against journalists who they felt “crossed the line.”

Blue & Chase: I stand corrected.
And good luck to all the journalism majors.
Comment by Ira — November 19, 2007 @ 8:37 pm
chase… perhaps that’s why they’re professors, and no longer journalists…
