Death to popups!

I think I found the source of those !@#$!@$%@ popups and killed it. Let me know if you still get popups…

Update: Back to the drawing board. Sigh…

  3. Ugh. Ok, I know where it’s coming from. I thought it might have been Google Analytics. But it’s not. It’s Motigo. And I don’t know how to get rid of that. It’s definitely not coming from Blogsome. I asked them and they told me flat out that they don’t do popups…

  4. What service does Motigo provide you?

  5. I have never gotten a popup on this site, but I use Safari set to block popups. It’s no longer just a Mac thing, since Safari for Windows is now available…

  6. Ah, web stats. Per the fine print.

These advertising sponsorships can appear as a pop-up or pop-under advertisement or slide-in flash format.

If you do not wish to continue using our FREE Motigo Webstats service in exchange for advertising , very soon you will be able to use an AD-FREE, paid version of the motigo services - stay tuned for more news about the launch

  7. I use Webroot Spy Sweeper and haven’t had any problems with popups (knock on wood).

  8. Jeez, Spud. All this time I thought it was you! I still tuned in anyway.

  9. What about active meter for web stats? They appear to offer a free invisible web stats counter with no pop-ups?

  10. The problem isn’t finding a new web stat site. The problem is stripping out the Motigo stats. I never put that in the blog so I don’t know how to get rid of it. DON!!!!!

  11. Whoa! Someone hacked Spuds blog and planted an evil bot that serves up pop-up ads.

  12. I did not get a pop-up this time….

  13. and to think we cursed Blogsome the whole time. I can’t believe how useless Firefox has been against these things. I might have to check out Safari since it is free.

  14. I read some reviews about Safari for Windows a while back.. and they weren’t very flattering. I distinctively remember something about crashes! And I don’t play that crap. One thing I’ve noticed is if you leave the one popup active, new ones don’t seem to come on.. btw, I’m using FF with no special blocking extensions. I like my browsing to be extra fast.

  15. Adblock for FF kills 99% of all ads and pop-ups. I get maybe one pop-up per month.

  16. I’ve only got a couple popups ever using this site.

    Comment by Aaron — December 19, 2007 @ 11:42 pm

  17. I used to get them almost everytime i clicked a comment link. Bad enough, but a few of them crashed Mozilla which was reeeally aggravating.

  18. Hmmm… No popups yet. Knock wood.

  22. if i click on a link I get a pop-up, but if i right click and open the link in “new tab” there is no pop-up.

  23. Whatever is causing the popups, I have to say that some of them have gotten pretty bad lately, almost to the point where I don’t visit this blog at work anymore, because if anyone were to be looking when the one in particular shows up, it could be big problems… needless to say, some of the “adult” themed ads really have to go.

    Comment by Nobody — December 20, 2007 @ 2:48 pm

  24. Spud: After being absent for a few days, they just reappeared!

    Comment by Ira — December 20, 2007 @ 8:58 pm

  25. I use Mozilla Firefox and it “prevented this site from opening a popup window”.

However, I then get these things as pop-behinds, in this case for 3 things:

    a portable digital navigator
    Dino file share storage
    Visit Sweden (no kidding!)

Spud, thanks for trying to stop them

  26. Dino seems to be particularly persistent.
