The run-up to Iowa: Coverage Notes…

MSNBC has been airing advertising this week that is calling it “Super Week”. It doesn’t get into specifics but it sounds like starting Wednesday it will be all politics all week long.

Over on CNN, they are doing a bunch of things this week leading up to Iowa…

CNN will air three days of live political programming leading up to the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses. On New Year’s Day, the network will capitalize on its on-the-ground resources with “Ballot Bowl,” seven hours of uninterrupted political coverage anchored by a team of CNN reporters in the field. Viewers from around the country will get to experience political events from the perspective of Iowa and New Hampshire voters as CNN follows the candidates and carries some of their significant live and recent events, not in sound bites but in long-form. CNN’s day of exciting political coverage will begin with American Morning at 6 a.m. (ET). “Ballot Bowl” will immediately follow at 9 a.m. (ET) and will air until the start of The Situation Room at 4 p.m. (ET).

Then on Jan. 2, viewers can tune into a full day of in-depth political coverage during its regular programs. From 8-9 p.m. (ET), lead political anchor Wolf Blitzer along with Anderson Cooper, Lou Dobbs, Soledad O’Brien and the rest of the Best Political Team on Television will preview the Iowa caucuses in a CNN Election Special broadcast out of the new CNN Election Center in New York

Finally, CNN will marshal its extensive resources and political expertise for wall-to-wall coverage of the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3. Blitzer, joined again by Cooper and Dobbs, will guide the network’s special coverage of the Iowa caucuses out of the CNN Election Center. CNN’s special Iowa caucus programming will begin at 8 p.m. (ET) and run late into the night, concluding with Larry King hosting a special edition of Larry King Live at midnight (ET) with the latest analysis and insight into Iowa caucus results. During the prime-time coverage, CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien and senior political analyst Bill Schneider will review “entrance” polls of Iowans heading to caucus. Throughout the day and evening on Jan. 3, CNN’s Emmy Award-winning political team will offer the latest news and thoughtful analysis. Reporting from the field in Iowa will be Dana Bash, congressional correspondent; Candy Crowley, senior political correspondent; Tom Foreman, correspondent; Chris Lawrence, correspondent; Dan Lothian, Boston bureau chief; Joe Johns, correspondent; John Roberts, American Morning anchor; Mary Snow, correspondent; and Jessica Yellin, congressional correspondent. Gloria Borger, senior political analyst; Jack Cafferty, commentator; David Gergen, senior political analyst; John King, chief national correspondent; Suzanne Malveaux, White House correspondent; and Jeff Toobin, legal analyst; will provide analysis throughout the day from CNN’s Election Center in New York.
