Matthews, OTOH, puts himself out there as a moderate-to-liberal, with the same type of audience, so his statements were in fact impactful to the NH primary. Matthews did go over the top, even for him, and dems seem to have reacted and came out to show their support for her. His coverage, more so than anyone else's was singled out for it's burying of Clinton, and his misogyny with her campaign. Hell he got called out on primary night for it, even Clinton herself mocked his coverage of her the day before at a press conference. He's really become the poster boy for the whole thing.
