BigRed: Not really. Omit the Doc Block and the debates MSNBC have had and even with Olbermann’s numbers, the news programs are at best even with last year.

Alison, the difference is this time they said something offensive about a powerful Democrat. Until Olbermoron does that, he’s very, very safe. Bashing Republicans is what MSNBC is all about. It’s encouraged. It’s the only thing that can get them ratings.

Can you imagine if Shuster said Obama was pimping his wife on the campaign trail? Fired immediately. How about Bush pimping his daughters? Congratulations under the radar, probably. Just depends on the circumstances. Even KO would have been fired for the first example.

If they start “suspending” people for every offensive comment made, they’d have to do it to Olbermann, Scarborough and Matthews right along with Shuster. Shuster was just doing what he’d seen said a million times before on the network and no doubt was encourage to be “edgy” as part of MSNBC’s latest “rebranding”. So he gets thrown under the bus for it because he’s not as high up on the food chain as the rest are.

It’s also bothering me to no end that they are caving into a politican like this. What happens the next time a candidate feels something is offensive to them? And how do we define offensive? Is truth-telling now offensive?

Ree, if MSNBC wants to be something else other than a news outlet, that’s fine. If so, then it should stop selling itself as an objective news source and brand itself accurately.

GE always steps in when things get froggy, remember the Paris Hilton million dollar interview story? Remember they were courting Rosie O’Donnell, remember the VT fiasco? There is a point in keeping MSNBC or GE would unloaded it? We were discussing this under the lastest blog on Imus Times..GE’s purpose for MSNBC a spur-thistle, GE placed under Fox Network’s Saddle? Lately FNC has been complaining about GE not just MSNBC. FNC is about profit and ratings, they are into establishing a pecking order via Cable News, where they want to place MSNBC last. If the Clinton camp pulls out of the upcoming debate, then kiss Shuster goodbye. Given that the Dem race is so close, I don’t think that the debate will be canceled. It is pathetic that Matthews can’t support Shuster because of his own questionable statements. Shuster probably shouldn’t accept Chris’s help even if it is offered, given that scenario. And to top it off, KO apologized profusely for Shuster. How pathetic!

To me, it looks like MSNBC management oversight is extremely lax. The inmates are running the asylum. Maybe it’s time for the suits to step in and restore order. In the meantime, let’s see if the network makes it through 1 week without sliming someone.

Rememeber we all thought Tucker was numbered and that Shuster would get a show? Now it looks like Shuster is gone. If not, Hillary will drop out of the debate. Shuster’s wife works at Bloomberg; She could get him a job (answering phones).

The “pimped out” comment alone shouldn’t be enough to fire him, but when you couple it with his consistently inaccurate reporting, his sandbagging of a Republican congresswoman over a soldier’s death who wasn’t from her district, and his complete inability to be an objective reporter while covering politics…the pink slip should be signed quickly.

Throw in the fact Hillary’s letter whines that an apology isn’t good enough, and I’d say Shuster’s days are numbered.

MSNBC is a disaster, and management is doing what they always do… not taking responsibility for their actions. They were quoted months ago for wanting to be “edgier” than the other networks… so hosts were encouraged to do this, and now that they are being called out on it, the same managers who issued the directive are yelling at the talent for doing what they were asked to do. It’s a classic NBC thing, and has been going on for years. They would be doing Shuster a favor by firing him. Nobody should have to work in a rundown operation such as NBC. Meanwhile, Zucker, Capus, etc. continue to keep their jobs while throwing everyone and anyone under the bus.. Imus… Shuster, Matthews, etc.
