Super Tuesday: Fast Nationals…
With the big Democratic turnout last night and the near 50-50 split between Obama and Clinton in the results as the night progressed, viewership was high for Super Tuesday. CNN had the most viewers from 6pm-1am ET, FNC was second, and MSNBC third.

Monday’s Numbers…
FNC dominated the night with big numbers for the SOTU in Total Viewers and the Demo, beating MSNBC and CNN combined. Paradoxically, more people tuned in for MSNBC’s post SOTU analysis with Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews than watched the MSNBC broadcast of the SOTU itself; the only network to experience this phenomenon. This would suggest MSNBC’s hosts are pulling in viewers who want to hear what they have to say about the SOTU; presumably Keith Olbermann. They’ll watch the SOTU elsewhere but then tune in to MSNBC for reaction.

Rush to judgement - Cable news nets wound up doing an about face as the New Hampshire primary results trickled in. The evening started with last rights being given to the Clinton campaign and the annointing of Barack Obama only to wind up proclaiming Hillary as another “comeback kid”.

I’m breaking out the numbers to 1 am due to the Iowa caucuses.
Update: Because none of the networks aired the same programming at the same time throughout the evening, I’m not going to render a judgement as to who “won the night” because it all boils down to what you consider “the night” to be from a ratings breakdown. Countdown was on at 8 while CNN and FNC were doing Iowa at 8:30, but MSNBC was still covering Iowa. CNN and MSNBC were doing Iowa at 10pm while FNC was doing Hannity & Colmes but FNC was still covering Iowa. And the networks didn’t all peak at the same time. In terms of peak hours for the night, CNN and MSNBC peaked in P2+ and the Demo at 10pm. FNC’s peak hour in P2+ and the Demo was at 9pm.
